Sen. Rick Scott: Communist China Using Face Mask Ban to Intimidate Voters Ahead of Hong Kong Elections

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Rick Scott made the following statement after the Hong Kong High Court issued a week-long ban on the right of protestors to wear face masks.

Senator Rick Scott said, “It’s shameful that the government of Hong Kong is failing to recognize the rights of its citizens to peacefully assemble, particularly ahead of important elections this weekend. This is straight out of General Secretary Xi’s playbook. Communist China is trying to control who can run in this weekend’s elections and is using their puppets in Hong Kong to intimidate voters. The decision to ban face masks was wrong the first time and it’s wrong now. I am committed to the cause of freedom and democracy in Hong Kong and I urge the Court to reconsider its decision.”
